Resolution Together is a unique legal service designed to help couples navigate separation and divorce collaboratively, using the same solicitor rather than seeking separate legal advice. This alternative to the traditional lawyer/client approach provides a constructive, amicable route through what is often a challenging time.

Since the April 2022 changes to divorce law in England and Wales, which allow joint divorce applications, over 20% of separating couples have chosen this more collaborative path. If couples can now apply for divorce together, it makes sense that making key decisions about finances, children, and property in a joint setting should be the next logical step.

While divorce and separation can often lead to conflict, Resolution Together promotes a more cooperative approach, helping both parties reach a fair agreement on the division of finances, assets, and child arrangements, supporting everyone involved in achieving a balanced and respectful outcome.

How is Resolution Together different from Family Mediation services?

While Resolution Together and Family Mediation may sound similar, there are key differences to consider when choosing the right support during a separation.

Family Mediation involves a neutral third-party mediator who facilitates open discussions between separating couples to help them work towards a mutually agreeable solution. However, mediators cannot provide legal advice during the process, and most mediators will not draw up paperwork to bring any mediated agreement onto a binding footing. An independent solicitor will still be needed for this purpose.

By contrast, Resolution Together involves a neutral RT trained solicitor who performs a similar role to that of a Family mediator but with the added benefit of providing legal guidance and support. This solicitor can gather relevant information, advise both parties on their legal options, and assist in developing a proposed financial and parenting settlement, and who can then draw up any necessary paperwork or draft Court orders.

Suitability for Resolution Together

Before beginning the process, our Family Law team will assess whether Resolution Together is a suitable option for your situation. If your relationship involves heightened emotional conflict, a significant power imbalance, or a history of domestic abuse or coercive control, a different form of legal separation support may be more appropriate.

For Resolution Together to be effective, both parties must be willing to collaborate, communicate openly, and be transparent about their finances and personal circumstances.

If we determine that Resolution Together is not appropriate, we will provide tailored advice on other alternative dispute resolution (ADR) options or legal pathways to suit your circumstances.

The Resolution Together Process:

Step One:Initial Individual Meetings

We begin with a friendly, informal discussion with our RT-trained solicitor to explore your situation and assess whether Resolution Together is the right approach for your separation or divorce. Information will be provided about working with a single solicitor, and if your matter is suitable, you will progress to joint meetings.

Step Two: Joint first meeting:

In this session, both parties meet to clarify the next steps. We'll begin mapping out a clear, shared path forward.

Step Three: Financial information

Your RT trained solicitor will request and review key financial details, including property ownership, pensions, income, and any business assets, to ensure they have a complete and accurate picture.

Step Four: Schedule of assets

Once information is collected, we will compile a detailed schedule of assets and identify any missing details needed to proceed confidently and transparently.

Step Five: Settlement options

Our RT solicitor will offer legal advice and guidance through possible settlement options, helping both parties reach a balanced and legally sound agreement on finances and child arrangements.

Step Six: Next steps

Further joint meetings may be held to finalise the terms of your agreement, and if needed, we can refer you to other non-court separation solutions to ensure you have the support you need.
