Apprenticeships at Warner Goodman LLP

Here at Warner Goodman LLP, we realise that University isn’t suited to everyone and diving head first into the working world is some people's favoured approach. That’s why we offer Apprenticeships for people looking to learn on the job, while also earning a wage.

Why Warner Goodman LLP for an Apprenticeship?

We are an award-winning law firm that has been practising law for over 150 years with a wealth of knowledge that we’ll use to guide you towards completing qualifications that are industry recognised. An apprenticeship with us will provide you with skills and experiences that won’t just help you at work, but in life.

With a diverse team of 160 employees across branches in Fareham, Portsmouth, Southampton, Chandler’s Ford and Waterlooville, you’ll learn from a broad range of people across an extensive variety of legal services which will help you to decide which part of law you would like to specialise in.

We are a firm that enjoys seeing people succeed and achieve. We currently have many members of staff that started their career with us as Apprentices who have now completed industry recognised courses, moved into different positions and play key roles in different departments. They are able to do this not purely because we offer them guidance and support, but also the flexibility to study so that they can manage their amount of work and strike a good work-life balance.

During my apprenticeship I was able to learn whilst on the job and gain confidence in various areas, like working in an office environment and business administration which I didn't feel I would have been able to do if I was in full time education. I was also able to go to college one day a week, which helped me to easily balance my workload.

Amelia Ford, Paralegal in our Commercial team.

At Warner Goodman LLP, in addition to Apprenticeships within the legal profession, we have in the past also offered the following Apprenticeships in our Marketing and Accounts departments:

  • Association of Accounting Technicians Apprenticeship Levels 2 to 4
  • Business Administration Level 2 and 3
  • Paralegal Level 3

As a firm we are constantly looking to evolve and develop, and so becoming an Apprentice at Warner Goodman LLP will ensure you are at the cutting edge of your chosen field.

What is it like to be an Apprentice at Warner Goodman LLP?

You can hear from some of our current and past Apprentices below:

Amelia Ford – Paralegal in our Commercial team

Amelia joined the firm in September 2018 and gained experience working across multiple departments, including Company Commercial, Commercial Litigation & Dispute Resolution, and Commercial Property. She quickly enrolled on the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Business Administration, which she successfully passed in September 2019. Amelia then began studying for her CILEx Paralegal Apprenticeship and she became a fully qualified Paralegal in 2021.

Here, Amelia speaks on her experience as an Apprentice at the firm: “I chose Warner Goodman as it’s a well known firm and I have heard nothing but positive comments from both clients and employees. During this Apprenticeship I have been able to learn whilst on the job and gain confidence in various areas, like working in an office environment and business administration, which I didn't feel I would have been able to do if I was in full time education. I was also able to go to college one day a week, which helped me to easily balance my workload. The highlight of my Apprenticeship has been the opportunity to gain wider knowledge and understanding of the different aspects of Commercial Law, and watch them be put into practice by experienced and talented solicitors. I would highly recommend an apprenticeship with Warner Goodman to anyone. I was made to feel welcome and valued by not just the whole Commercial team, but also the firm in general and I have received constant support from them all every step of the way. I'm excited to further my career with my colleagues and Warner Goodman supporting me."

Toby Read - Business Administration Apprentice in our Commercial department

Toby began his Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship in October 2021 while working in our Southampton office.  In his role, he works to support his colleagues with their general administration and office requirements, mainly within the busy Commercial department of the firm.

Speaking of his apprenticeship, Toby says,I joined Warner Goodman to follow my dream career path and, with my sister joining the firm before me, she had told me the positive aspects of working at the firm.  I was interested in a legal career but was keen to earn a wage while I learn instead of acquiring debt from attending university.  The style of learning on the job compared to in lectures also appealed to me.  My end goal is to qualify as a Solicitor and I feel the apprenticeship so far has helped me acquire many new skills towards this, such as a more sophisticated telephone manner, a good understanding of case management and how to manage my time effectively.  I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship as a route to your chosen career if you believe you learn better in the working environment opposed to a classroom.  I am delighted that I have been able to do my apprenticeship at Warner Goodman with the hard-working team here and I thoroughly enjoy the variety of the work I do, each day is always different."
