The rights of consumers when using digital services made easy

  • Posted

The European Commission has published an easy to read summary of the rights of consumers when accessing digital and communications services including on-line purchasing says Geoffrey Sturgess of Hampshire based law firm Warner Goodman Commercial.

Issued in December 2012 the document brings together all the various rights afforded to consumers in the digital world by European Law and includes sections on cancellation rights and privacy, and protection of personal data and security which are specific to distance contracting as well as on unfair contract terms and dispute resolution relevant to any dealings with consumers in Europe.

Geoffrey comments, “These rights are just as relevant to UK only dealings as to cross border activities and the short paper, available at https://ec.europa.eu/digital-single-market/code-eu-online-rights, should be essential reading for anyone dealing with consumers in the electronic world particularly if they are just moving into ecommerce.

“The paper is easy to read and its only shortcoming, for the UK based reader, is that it relies upon, and quotes, the EU directives creating the relevant rights, rather than on the local legislation putting them into effect.”
