Warner Goodman: Our year in 2017
2017 has been an exciting and busy year for the teams at Warner Goodman. Ed Voller, Managing Partner, takes a look back at the last twelve months, and a sneak peek at what’s to come next year!
Warner Goodman’s work with charities
We are very proud with the relationships we have with local and national charities; one in particular being with Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association. Our partnership began with the charity in 2014 and at first took the form of a social media campaign to raise awareness of their Facebook page and encourage new “likes”. We donated £1 for every new like during National Down Syndrome Awareness Week, and were delighted when we were able to present the charity with a cheque for £1,000. We have continued with the campaign since then and each year it has continued to grow. Now, not only do we promote the social media campaign each March, but we have also had employees take part in the charity’s fundraising events, including an abseil down Spinnaker Tower, teams in the Great South Run and this year, Jenny Colvin from our Commercial Property team faced her fear and joined in their 10,000 foot skydive! Through the social media campaign and our other activities, we have now raised over £12,000 for Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association since 2014; a figure we hope to increase in the coming years.
2017 also saw us start a journey with SERV Wessex, a charity formed of motorbike volunteers transporting blood and other vital items to hospitals. In September, we donated £1,000 to the charity as part of our campaign to keep one bike on the road for a year. In total, we hope to raise £2,500 through fundraising activities to cover expenses such as insurance, tax, servicing and any repairs.
National charity campaigns also form a part of our fundraising, and through the year we have taken part in other events such as Cupcake Day, raising funds for Alzheimer’s Society, and Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day.
We are Company of the Year!
One particular highlight for us as a firm this year has been winning Company of the Year at the Hampshire Venus Awards. The Venus Awards celebrate and recognise the achievements of women in business, and to be named as Company of the Year was a proud moment for us at the awards ceremony in November. Silver Linings, the category sponsor, felt our investment in technology, training and promotion opportunities for women at Warner Goodman made us worthy winners of the prestigious award.
In November, we were also finalists at the annual LawNet Awards. LawNet is a membership organisation for law firms across the UK, and so to be chosen as finalists for the Team of Year award for our Employment team, and Best Community Contribution for our work with Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association was incredibly rewarding. While we were pipped to the post for both awards, to reach the finals out of so many other LawNet firms and teams was a fantastic achievement for all involved.
Promotions at Warner Goodman
In May this year, we welcomed two new Partners to the firm; Helen Porter and Torion Bowles. Both Helen and Torion are based in our Commercial Litigation team in Southampton and bring a vast amount of experience and insight to the Partnership, now made up of 17 Partners.
We were also delighted to announce in May the promotion of four Associates; Emma Kemp, Jenny Colvin, Emma Gilliland and Dena Mellor. We now have 24 Associates at Warner Goodman from across our Commercial and private client entities, as well as from our Marketing and IT departments, all keen to contribute towards shaping the future of our firm.
Investment in our employees is a key part of our ethos here at Warner Goodman, and we are always proud when we announce new Partners, Associates, or when our Trainee Solicitors qualify and become permanent members of the firm. Hannah Rogers is one such example, who qualified in September and is now a Solicitor in our Portsmouth based Family team. In 2018, we look forward to three of our Trainee Solicitors qualifying and, whether they remain with the firm or move to pastures new, we are proud to have been a part of the beginning of their legal careers.

An important part of any firm’s success in the modern world is to embrace new technologies and acknowledge the ways in which our clients wish to work and research us. What does 2018 have in store for Warner Goodman?
As we look ahead to 2018, we prepare ourselves for more changes in the legal industry; new data protection regulations will come into force on 25th May 2018 which will radically alter the face of data protection, and our Employment team are busy making arrangements for another full year of employment law seminars and masterclasses. We will also be making some exciting announcements as the year progresses, so make sure you follow us on social media to be the first to see!
